Sewing Thread

Here at Fred’s Haberdashery, we have many different types of sewing threads. From metallic threads suited for decorating fabric, a range of stranded and light-effect DMC threads, rayon machine threads, to mending and darning wool to repair your favourite woollens. All our threads come in a variety of colours, so you’re sure to find the perfect one for you. They can be combined with our sewing accessories to create the perfect haberdashery pieces.

DMC Stranded Threads

DMC have been making sewing threads since 1746, and today sell more than a million skeins a day. DMC is still a favourite and is one of the most recognised brands.

Each thread is made up of six separate threads. For a thick stitch, use the full six strands, or something finer, reduce the number of strands accordingly. DMC stranded threads come in five hundred colours.

Here at Fred’s Haberdashery, we supply DMC thread in a wide range of colours. To find out more about the sewing materials we sell and why you should opt for DMC thread for your next embroidery project, speak to one of our friendly team on 01246 204504.

Gutermann Thread

Gutermann have been making threads for more than two-hundred and seventy-five years. Their promise of consistent ‘made in Europe’ quality is backed by their two centuries of experience.

Gutermann have a range of sewing threads, from hand-quilting to machine embroidery thread, and elastic to polyester. There are hundreds of shades available, whether you wish to match your sewing material or create an accent, we have the perfect colour for you!

Machine Embroidery ThreadA selection of light blue/turquoise machine embroidery thread.

Rayon is the most popular to use, due to how widely available, attractive and easy to use it is. Polyester is a just as loved thread that doesn’t shrink, is fade resistant, and its strength makes it ideal for children’s clothes. Cotton is a great traditional thread, with a matte finish.

Machine threads come in a wide range of brands and colours, depending on your needs. Our expert team know the best threads to use for your machine so have a chat with them if you’re not sure which to use.

Elastic Thread

Elastic thread is a little thicker than normal sewing thread and stretches more. Best used with stretchy fabric or for creating an elastic waistband, but care should be taken not to pull while

winding, or it will snap. Elastic thread in machine sewing should be used in the bobbin and not as a top stitch. A range of colours are available.

Metallic / Glitter ThreadStarmist Metallic/Glitter Threads

Metallic thread can be the most awkward of all sewing materials to work with, but the end result is worth the patience and effort of using it. Usually made by twisting a fine foil in with the sewing thread, it is strong and pliable with a metallic shimmer.

It can be used with other embroidery threads to create stunning patterns, or alone as a filling or outline stitch. It is especially popular for creating celebration pieces such as in Christmas crafts, along with our range of sewing accessories. See our range of metallic threads to add a touch of sparkle to your next project.
