A needle case is a great way to use up small scraps of felt and fabric and experiment with embroidery

Creating needlecases is a delightful sewing project that allows you to combine various materials like felt, fabric scraps, and embroidery. They make a great little gift for fellow sewers or a first project with a child. Here are five different ideas to inspire you.

1. Floral Garden Needlecase

Create a vibrant floral garden-themed needlecase. Use felt as the base and embellish it with fabric scrap flowers. You can use embroidery to add details such as stems and leaves. Consider using a variety of colorful threads to make the flowers pop and why not throw in a few odd buttons too. Make life easier by using our Fuse-a-web to to the edges fraying and bind the petals to the background before embroidering. Make the outer cover and then sew in some sheets of felt for the inner pages.

Materials Needed:

  • Felt (for the base)
  • Fabric scraps (for flowers)
  • Embroidery thread (variety of colours)
  • Buttons
  • Fuse-a-web (bonds 2 fabrics together using heat)

2. Cute Cat Needlecase

Design a needlecase featuring cute animal characters. Create the basic shape out of felt, a cat is a great shape to work with but an owl, or fox would work well too. Add facial features and details using embroidery. This needlecase can be a charming gift for an animal lover.

Materials Needed:

  • Felt (various colors for animals)
  • Embroidery thread
  • Fabric scraps (for adding texture or clothing)

3. Patchwork Heart Needlecase

Combine fabric scraps to create a patchwork heart design. Sew small square pieces of fabric together to form a patchwork fabric. Cut out 2 heart shapes from the patchwork and 2 from a plain cotton or felt. With rich sides together sew a patchwork heart to a plain heart leaving a small gap to turn. Sandwich your felt needle pages inside the outer hearts to finish your case.

Materials Needed:

  • Felt (for the base)
  • Fabric scraps (for patchwork)
  • Embroidery thread

4. Vintage Lace and Embroidery Needlecase

Incorporate vintage elements such as lace and intricate embroidery. Denim fabric scraps work well with lace. Embroider delicate patterns like vines or tiny flowers to enhance the classic look and use ribbon scarps as a tie closure.

Materials Needed:

  • Felt (for the base)
  • Denim or other fabric scraps
  • Lace trims
  • Embroidery thread

5. House Needlecase

Craft a house-shaped needlecase. Use felt for the structure of the house and fabric scraps for windows and doors. Embroider roof tiles, window panes, and garden details to bring this charming little house to life.

Materials Needed:

  • Felt (for the house shape)
  • Fabric scraps (for details)
  • Embroidery thread

These ideas will hopefully give you some inspiration for creating a needlecase to showcase your own creativity and sewing skills. With a bit of time and thought you can create something really special either for yourself or as a gift.
